A Cozy Newborn Session at Home

Creatively, this session was such a fun challenge.

The family’s home had beautiful natural light, but their living area was decorated with dark walls and rich tones. Normally, my work leans a little lighter, so this gave me the opportunity to embrace something deeper and more intimate.

And honestly? I love it.

The darker paint created such a beautiful contrast between the family and their surroundings. It gave the images a cozy, quiet vibes.

It reminded me that beautiful newborn photography doesn’t have to look one specific way. I truly believe that the best, heirloom-quality photos come from embracing what makes your family and your home unique, rather than trendy styles.

Can You Include Pets in Newborn Photos?

Absolutely, but only if it feels natural and stress-free.

This is probably my biggest piece of advice when it comes to pets: the more pressure you put on the moment, the less likely it is to happen.

For example, we stepped into this session totally chill. The family simply called their dog over, loved on him, and let him be part of the story. We captured sweet moments with their cats naturally as they meandered by. Notably, they decided to show when we weren’t paying attention to them. Typical cats!

Anyway, my point is this…No forcing. No stress.

Another Benefit to Faceless Photography- The Details!

At every newborn session, I make sure to capture the tiny details.

The fingers.

The toes.

The tiny feet resting in Dad’s hand.

First of all, these pics are deceptively beautiful. Everyone looks happy and content. You would never believe that their youngest (at the time) wasn’t having it at all.

Every time he was held, he screamed. Every time we directed him to walk in a specific direction, he screamed. Mom and dad were such good sports and rolled with the waves through it all!

If you have a tyrannical toddler, I hope this encourages you. You absolutely can get beautiful maternity and family photos that you’ll treasure for years to come.

And just as importantly, you’re working with a photographer who won’t judge you or your children. Sometimes kids just hate being tied down. The 2–3 age range is tough. They’re at that stage where they can only sort of follow directions and rarely want to. That’s okay. We can still create beautiful memories together. I promise.

Just know they might not be perfectly posed. Then again, if you’re looking for a maternity photographer in Clemmons who prefers traditional poses, I’m probably not your girl. In sessions, I always capture those “Greeting Card” images, but for the most part, we’re living for the moment, capturing connection, and trying to recreate genuine memories you’ll cherish forever.

Cloudy Days Photograph so Well

Another reason I loved this session? The mood.

Going into the evening, I had a vision of dreamy spring blossoms bathed in golden hour light. Once again, North Carolina laughed in my face. A violent thunderstorm rolled through the night before and knocked down many of the blooms, so we had to be strategic if we wanted to include them. And as you can tell, the skies stayed overcast.

Ironically, it made me appreciate cloudy days even more.

Because we spent much of the session wrangling a busy toddler, the soft, even light gave us the freedom to move wherever we needed without worrying about harsh shadows or squinting. The result was gorgeous, natural skin tones and the flexibility to focus on what mattered most: this sweet family.

Bonus Reason: Outfit Coordination

Can we all just take a moment to appreciate this Mama’s nails? I mean…Wow.

In my prep emails, I always recommend prettyifying your nails before your session. That doesn’t necessarily mean getting the full manicure (full disclosure, I haven’t had one of those for years), but it does mean at trimming them to something you won’t be embarrassed by.

This mama understood the assignment. In fact, the whole family’s outfits coordinate so well. This is a super easy way to ensure that your images turn out beautiful!

From Bump to Baby: This Family Let Me See it All

My final reason for loving this session? They chose my Bump to Baby Package and invited me back for their newborn photos.

There’s something really special about walking through multiple seasons of life with a family. The more familiar you become with your photographer, the more relaxed everyone feels in front of the camera. This extended family winter session completely defied the stereotype that outdoor winter photos are ugly, because honestly? This was pure magic.

First of all, we were gifted perfect, almost-unheard-of winter weather—70 degrees, no rain, and happy smiles all around. 

This was actually the third time I’ve photographed this sweet family (fourth, if you count business headshots). From a beautiful Easter mini session last spring to newborn photos just this October, they’re quickly becoming some of my favorite people to work with. So when Mama reached out to ask if I’d photograph their out-of-town extended family, I was absolutely delighted. 

I mean, how could I not be? This family strikes that perfect balance of easygoing and relaxed, yet totally collaborative. They offered so many good ideas and input that made their photos feel unmistakably theirs.

Extended Family Session at Tanglewood Park

Extended family sessions can feel intimidating for clients and photographers. There are more people, more combinations, and usually a longer must-have list. But here’s the secret: once we capture the big group photos, everything slows down.

I’ve learned to section everyone off into individual family units, so the rest of the group can relax, chat, and enjoy being together while I work. That was exactly the game plan for this photoshoot. Afterward, “Mimi” told me she had a lot of fun, which is exactly what I was hoping for. Family photos, even extended family photo sessions, should feel natural and unrushed. 

The Challenges (Because There’s Always Something)

If you can’t tell already, my clients were perfect. The sun… was not.

This was technically a midday winter session with sometimes overcast skies and sometimes harsh sun. Normally, I’d rejoice over overcast light, but winter clouds can be tricky, especially when they’re inconsistent.

Then add in the typical winter color palette: pukish browns mixed with too-dark, even black, evergreens. It’s not impossible, but it does require intentional choices about where to shoot and how to move through a space.

Thankfully, Tanglewood Park offers so much variety that we were able to adapt easily.

How We Made It Work

Because my clients were drawn to the historical buildings, we started there. I’m so glad we did. Even light paired with charming brick is one of my favorite combinations. It creates a timeless look that photographs beautifully year-round.

Next, we made our way to the magnolia tree (if you haven’t seen it, you really should. It’s breath-taking!). And this brings me to my favorite part of the shoot–the manor. I’ve photographed Tanglewood tons of times, but I’d never had the chance to shoot near the manor before (the Arboretum usually steals the spotlight). When the BeBo (the adorable nickname for our power couple) requested it as their backdrop, I wanted to jump with happiness. To me, this manor is what North Carolina architecture is all about. It’s such a romantic, elegant backdrop!

We wrapped up the session behind the Arboretum near the old fence line, where the light softened just enough to close the session on a warm, intimate note.

I had so much fun with this family, and I’m incredibly honored they trusted me again to capture another chapter of their story.

When I became a mom, I didn’t fully understand the value of professional newborn photography. I was exhausted. I was overwhelmed. And honestly, I was broke. Spending money on something that felt like a luxury just wasn’t an option, so I did what so many new moms do: I DIY’d it.

I got pretty pictures, but I didn’t capture the moment.

I didn’t capture my husband and me holding my daughter’s tiny body in our hands. I didn’t capture the awe, the weight of it all, or the way time seemed to stand still and race forward all at once.

With my second baby, we hired an incredibly talented photog friend. And those images? I still look at them almost every day. Not because they’re technically perfect, but because they’re more than photos. They’re a heartbeat frozen in time.

Presence, Not Perfection: What to Expect from My Newborn Sessions

As a Winston-Salem lifestyle newborn photographer, I don’t believe newborn sessions should feel stiff, stressful, or overly posed. This season of life is tender. Raw. The last thing a new mama needs is pressure to perform or make everything look “just right.”

During my sessions, you’ll hold your baby most of the time. You’ll snuggle, breathe them in, and just be. If your baby cries, we pause. If they need to eat, we stop. If siblings wander in and out of the frame, that’s okay too. Real life is welcome here.

What a Lifestyle Newborn Session Actually Feels Like

When clients ask what to expect, I tell them this: it’s cozy, unhurried, and intimate. 

I think natural light and a familiar space is the secret sauce to letting the story happen naturally. We’ll choose one or two rooms with good morning light (most likely a bedroom, living room, or your little one’s nursery).

And no, your house doesn’t need to be spotless. I promise. Literally every single client apologizes for the mess. You seriously don’t have to though. I’m a mom too, and I remember this season vividly. Declutter, but for heaven’s sake, don’t clean.

How Long My Sessions Last

Most sessions last about 1.5 to 2 hours. We move at your baby’s pace so we can pause for feedings, diaper changes, and breaks without feeling rushed or behind.

Gentle Guidance, Minimal Styling, Timeless Results

My style is very minimal and intentional. While most of the time I recommend neutral tones, soft textures, and simple outfits, I also encourage you to be you. If you’ll take a peek at my work, you’ll quickly find that I love COLOR. If you love bold colors too, don’t despair. I can help you pull your outfits together in a way that reflects your style without overpowering the moment. 

When I Say Minimal: Props and Such

Traditional newborn photography (that’s the studio newborn photography with the beautiful props and proses) is an art. The photographers who do it are genuine artists. However, that’s not my style.

I don’t rely on heavy props or elaborate setups. If we do any wrapped photos, they’re simple and baby-led. Most of the gallery will be you loving on your newborn and capturing the details you don’t want to forget: tiny fingers, wrinkly toes, the way they fit perfectly against your chest.

These images are meant to feel honest.

Sometimes, the thought of taking photos in winter can feel quite…icky. Gray skies, brown grass, shorter days. Yeah, totally not ideal. But sometimes (like if you’re an expecting mama or you great-grandma is in town only for Christmas), winter photo sessions become absolutely necessary. 

Luckily for you, Winston-Salem is full locations that are actually beautiful year-round! This city is incredibly rich in history and natural beauty, and I love shooting here.

1. Old Salem

Old Salem will always have my heart.

The cobblestone streets, historic homes, and Moravian architecture create a backdrop that feels timeless in any season. In winter especially, the lack of flora actually accentuates the architecture. No distractions!

One of my favorite things about Old Salem is how alive it feels. Even after multiple visits with my own family, I still feel like we haven’t uncovered everything there is to see. After your session, you should totally explore!

• Access to golden hour light
• A blend of architectural and natural backdrops

2. Tanglewood Park

Looking for a budget-friendly location with tons of beautiful backdrops? Tanglewood Park is IT.

This park offers so much variety that it almost feels like multiple locations in one. Mallard Lake is absolutely stunning year-round, and the surrounding trails feel enchanted because you’re surrounded by towering pines.

There’s an open grassy area near the horse pastures that gives your session room to breathe, plus the stables for a more rustic look. The Arboretum shines best in spring and summer, but the manor and surrounding historical buildings offer an all-season backdrop.

Why I love it:

• Lake views and wooded trails
• Historical buildings
• Wide open spaces to let the kiddos run
• Horses (need I say more?)
• Endless variety without needing to travel far
• It’s relaxed, expansive, and perfect for families who want room to roam.

3. Miller Park

Some of my favorite images I’ve ever taken were made here. The golden hour light filters through this park in the most breathtaking way—it’s soft, glowy, and incredibly flattering, even in winter.

There’s a creek that runs through the park, and while I wouldn’t necessarily advise diving right in, it’s actually super fun to play around it (and those pictures will likely be some of your favorites).

• The creek and bridge next to it

4. Bethabara Park

I almost hesitate to share this one, because it’s kind of Winston-Salem’s best-kept secret.

If you love Moravian architecture without the crowds, check out Bethabara Park.

Between the palisade, the Gemeinhaus, wooded trails, and gardens, there’s a beautiful mix of structure and nature. And…this might sound weird, but I’m kind of in love with the livestock shelters.

• Moravian Architecture
• Trails and gardens
• More open spaces for young children to play
• Tucked-away feel

5. Innovation Quarter

For families who love something a little more modern, Innovation Quarter is a great option.

It’s urban, but still beautiful. The Coal Pit is a popular spot for good reason, and the surrounding murals add color and interest—especially helpful during the winter months when nature is more subdued.

This location works especially well for families who want something different from fields and trees, while still keeping the session relaxed and approachable. 

Why I love it:

• Urban textures and clean lines
• Colorful murals and modern architecture
• Full of personality
• Lots of things to do once you’re done with the shoot (like eating at Cugino Forno or grabbing a chicken sandwich at Krankies)

Okay, before you go, I want you to have an idea on what to expect from this session. I’m a lifestyle newborn photographer. That means my heart and soul is in creating a gallery that reflects YOUR FAMILY. I take photos in your home, because that’s where you live, interact, and create memories together. I photograph exclusively with natural light and minimal props because I want my clients to feel comfortable and candid. 

I don’t rely on studio setups or heavily styled poses. Instead, I create images that feel timeless, nostalgic, cozy, and intimate.

There’s no rushing, no pressure, and no expectation that your baby behaves a certain way. Some babies cry, and that’s totally okay. We’ll still get beautiful photos.

Best of all, my sessions are “short.” By short, I mean around 1.5-2 hours. We’ll move at your baby’s pace, pausing for feedings, diaper changes, snuggles, and breaks as needed. But, because we aren’t committing to intricate, detailed poses, there’s no need to allot 5 hours for our sessions.

Between the historic homes, cobblestone walkways, and colorful trees, Old Salem captures autumn at its finest. Stephanie also happens to love history so this location felt meant to be.

That said, Old Salem can be tricky to photograph. It’s a popular spot, and golden hour likes to play a little hide-and-seek behind the buildings. But if you can find it, the session is pure magic.

A Blend of Play and Posing: Our Family Session Highlights

We started our session at the covered bridge for classic family portraits before strolling to the barn. Of course, we had to pause for some King of the Mountain. 

Stephanie and Mitch are laid-back and joy-filled, which allowed me to capture their kids just being kids.

As the light began to fade, we moved toward the gardens. In my humble opinion, that’s where the magic really happened. The kids played tag, dad joined in for a little wrestling, and Stephanie just got to enjoy herself.

Their daughter spotted the corn stalks and begged for a photo to send to her grandma. How could I resist? The girl’s got a great eye for backdrops.

Capturing Their Love

My favorite part of this session—and the reason it lives in my mind on repeat—is this family’s deep, genuine love for one another. You can feel it in every picture.
